CourageToChange-tovah

After suffering a life of addiction and recovered, I wanted to share some of my experience & knowledge in a blog. If I can help someone somewhere, besides those that I help in my own community, then I will be very happy. Addiction of any kind is a serious deadly disease. It doesn't go away on it's own! Tovah

What Is Substance Abuse Counseling?

Substance abuse is a serious problem. While any mental health problem can be life-threatening and can seriously affect the people around the sufferer, substance abuse has a particular reputation for ruining lives and families. If you or someone you know has a substance abuse problem, you must get help before lives are destroyed. You simply cannot afford to wait.

Substance abuse counselling is counselling with a professional trained in dealing with people who are suffering from an addiction to a dangerous substance, usually some form of drugs or alcohol. These counsellors may be social workers, psychologists, or some other professional trained in dealing with sufferers of substance abuse.

Who Can Benefit from Substance Abuse Counselling?

Anyone who is suffering from an addiction can and should avail themselves of substance abuse counselling. Furthermore, friends and relatives of those suffering from substance abuse should also consider seeking counselling. Having a loved one suffer in the grip of a substance abuse addiction can be extremely difficult and stressful, and it is important to get the proper support for yourself so that you can offer the necessary support to the one you care about.

THIS COULD BE:

A MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY.

Some young people have an easier time in talking about their feelings, others may need a more creative approach to unlocking fears and difficulties which are holding them back from participating better at school, college & work or finding positive, healthy, friendships.
As an immigrant community in Israel, we face the stress and pressures that others don't. Some people are able to overcome the challenges whilst others can feel overwhelmed. This can lead teenagers or parents for that matter to be confused, angry or resentful at leaving their friends in the 'old country,' fear of not fitting in, learning a new language, these things can easily lead a person to inappropriate behaviours, inappropriate relationships, drug abuse or alcoholism. Working with someone who is able to understand those difficulties, sharing the burden, can often help either individually or in a group session. There might not seem to be an easy answer but working towards a solution instead of working in the problem usually brings results!
Look out for unusual signs of behaviour, if you are worried about your child or family member e.g change of moods, arguing more than usual, sleeping more than usual, change of dressing, missing school or work, not coming home. Maybe these are but a few warning signs that someone needs help.
